The Mitsubishi Lancer, particularly the late 1990s to early 2000s models, is a compact saloon that appeals to budget-conscious buyers in Kenya seeking a reliable daily driver. Known for its straightforward design and practicality, it's a solid choice for first-time car owners or those upgrading from a boda. Its 2WD configuration and practical saloon body make it suitable for urban commuting and occasional upcountry trips, though it's best on tarmac.
The Lancer is generally reliable, with its 4G15 and 4G18 engines known for durability if well-maintained. However, age-related issues like electrical gremlins and suspension wear are common, especially in older models.
Routine maintenance is straightforward, with service intervals every 5,000 km. The automatic transmission requires regular fluid changes to prevent issues, and suspension components may need more frequent attention due to Kenya's rough roads. Overall, maintenance costs are moderate compared to peers.
Parts for the Lancer are readily available in Nairobi's Kirinyaga Road and Grogan areas, as well as major towns like Mombasa and Nakuru. Both genuine and aftermarket options exist, though some specific parts like electronic components might require sourcing from importers or online.
The Lancer's petrol engine is reasonably efficient for its age, offering decent fuel economy on highways but can be a bit thirsty in stop-and-go Nairobi traffic. Expect moderate consumption that balances between economy and performance.
