How to use this document
- 1Fill in an annual estimate for each cost line for the car you're considering.
- 2Add them up for a yearly and a monthly total.
- 3Compare two or three cars — a cheaper car with thirsty fuel or expensive parts can cost more to own.
Questions
What does it really cost to own a car in Kenya?
Beyond the purchase price, budget for fuel, insurance, servicing and repairs, tyres, licensing and inspection, parking, and depreciation (the value the car loses). Fuel economy and depreciation are usually the biggest hidden costs.
Why compare total cost of ownership instead of just price?
Two cars at the same price can cost very different amounts to run. A model that's cheap to buy but heavy on fuel, insurance or parts can work out more expensive over a few years.
